The Penn State Alumni AssociationWhat’s been happening: In 2005, I created a study-abroad scholarship, awarded annually by Penn State's Department of Education Abroad, so that more students might experience the extraordinary -- and potentially life-changing -- opportunity of studying abroad, as I did in Spain in 1967. The scholarship is named for my so-called "Spanish parents," in whose family I lived while in Salamanca: Felicidad Lopez Sanchez and Julian Esteban Blanco. The "Fely Scholarship" not only honors my "Spanish parents," but reaffirms the incalculable value of education abroad for all students, especially given the global challenges the next generations will be confronting. It was a joy to work with the professionals of the Department of Education Abroad in establishing the scholarship. And as an alumna, I am proud of their enduring commitment to the expansion of study abroad opportunities for Penn State students. |
